Script Fees

Castlemaine vet clinic charges for a repeat script to cover our time, administrative work, and the professional responsibility of ensuring the medication is safe and appropriate  for your animal. This fee offsets the veterinarian's time taken to accurately document the prescription, as well as ensuring the medication is still suitable, even if the patient isn't seen for a full consultation. In contrast, human pharmacies and online pet pharmacies are not responsible for assessing the animal's health or the need for the medication, and they are often subject to different regulatory and financial models, including government rebates for some medications.

Why a Vet Charges for a Script

  • Professional Responsibility:

The vet has a legal and ethical obligation to ensure the treatment is safe, appropriate, and lawful for the animal. Writing a script is a professional service.

  • Time and Resources:

A vet spends time and resources preparing the script, often requiring nursing staff to handle administrative tasks.

  • Legally Compliant Format:

The prescription must be in a legally compliant format, which involves specific documentation and procedures.

  • Pet's Health Assessment:

Even for a repeat script, the vet may need to confirm the pet's condition, weight, or behaviour has not changed to ensure the ongoing medication is still safe and effective.

Why a Chemist Doesn't

  • No Health Assessment:

Unlike a vet, a human chemist or online pet pharmacy is not responsible for assessing the patient's overall health or the appropriateness of the prescribed medication.

  • Dispensing Service:

A chemist's role is to dispense the medication as directed by the prescriber (the vet).

  • Government Subsidies:

In countries like Australia, human medicines can be subsidized through government schemes, which can influence the perceived cost of medications at a pharmacy.

What a Vet's Fee Includes

  • Expertise and Care:

The fee reflects the veterinarian's knowledge, experience, and responsibility in overseeing the animal's medication.

  • Administrative Costs:

It covers the time and effort involved in creating and managing the prescription.

  • Ensuring Continued Safety:

The fee helps to ensure that a veterinary professional is involved in ongoing medication management, which is critical for pet safety and well-being.
